Student-On-Teacher Violence.
A disturbing incident occurred on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Justice Chinwuba Memorial Secondary School in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government area of Anambra State, where an unidentified student reportedly stabbed a geography teacher on school premises.
The attack took place in the morning when the teacher attempted to correct a group of students for allegedly bringing phones into the classroom, according to a report.
Reports say that the teacher ordered the students to kneel down.
Despite the presence of other teachers, the principal, and the Otuocha Zonal Director, the students refused to comply and physically confronted the teacher.
Teacher testifies in a video clip
Meanwhile, in a video now circulating on the internet the teacher, a male (name undisclosed), recounts the harrowing incident.
Visible in the video are two severe knife wounds on the teacher’s hands: one on his right wrist, the other on his left elbow.
According to him, the student, who claimed to be a cultist and an indigenous student, challenged the teacher, questioning whether he was from the local town.
This altercation escalated into violence, resulting in the teacher’s attack.
Subsequently, the situation worsened before school dismissal, as the student, aided by his junior sister and friends, launched a violent attack on the teacher using dangerous objects like canes and daggers.
“The boy asked me are you from Aguleri. And I told him is it because i am not from Aguleri, that is why you have to disobey me?
“So definitely, I flogged the boy. The boy collected the cane from me and flogged me back.
“And then went home, brought a dagger, a knife and also with canes and then started flogging me.
“And then started stabbing me on my body with his sister that is in JSS2,” the teacher stated.
Additionally, the teacher expressed bewilderment, stating he had no idea what had prompted the attack.
He appealed to top educational stakeholders, including the Education Commissioner, Permanent Secretary, and Governor, to look into the attack.
The teacher demands justice
Fearing for his life, the teacher demanded the immediate apprehension of the student.
“Why I am saying this thing is that let the commissioner of Education, the Permanent Secretary and also the Governor should see this thing because it is getting out of hand.
“I need the boy to be apprehended because my life is at risk.
“I need the State Government to come and apprehend the boy.
“That’s why I am just creating this awareness.
“For the Commissioner, for the PPSSC and also for the State Government to see what already they have done to me”, noted the teacher.
When asked about medical treatment, the teacher stated he hadn’t received medical care but had informed local vigilantes about the incident.
He expressed: “I haven’t gone to any medication because I have not been paid.
“Although I have reported to the vigilantes. That is why the vigilantes are there”.
This disturbing incident highlights concerns about student behavior, discipline, and safety within schools.
The involvement of external parties, including the student’s family members, raises questions about the broader community’s influence on school conflicts.
Experts point to various factors contributing to this trend.
They include breakdown in discipline and parental guidance, increasing stress and pressure on students.
Others are lack of effective conflict resolution mechanisms in schools and Inadequate teacher training and support.
