JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — At least 12 people have been killed and nine others injured in a late-night mass shooting in Johannesburg, in what authorities describe as one of the latest outbreaks of deadly gun violence in the country.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night in the Cleveland area of the city, where armed attackers stormed an informal settlement and opened fire on residents before fleeing the scene, according to South African police.

Police said more than 10 suspects were involved in the attack and arrived in a white minibus-style vehicle before moving through the area and shooting at people at multiple locations within the settlement.

Emergency services confirmed that 11 victims died at the scene while another later succumbed to injuries in hospital, bringing the death toll to 12. Nine injured survivors were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, but no arrests had been made at the time of reporting. The motive for the attack remains unclear and is under investigation.

Residents described a scene of chaos and fear as gunfire erupted late at night, with many forced to flee for safety while others attempted to assist the wounded before emergency responders arrived.

Police officials have condemned the incident as a severe act of violence, noting that informal settlements in parts of Johannesburg have increasingly been affected by organised criminal activity and gang-related conflicts.

South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime, with mass shootings becoming a recurring concern in several urban and township communities in recent years.

Authorities have promised intensified investigations and increased security operations in the affected area as efforts continue to track down those responsible for the attack.
