Former Air Canada Pilot Charged Over Fake Licence Scheme

OTTAWA, CANADA — A former Air Canada pilot has been charged with multiple criminal offences after allegedly flying tens of thousands of passengers over nearly 17 years using a falsified pilot’s licence, Canadian authorities have announced.

Police in Canada said the accused, identified as a former commercial pilot, is alleged to have gained and maintained employment with Air Canada using fraudulent certification documents that enabled him to operate passenger flights without meeting the required professional licensing standards.

According to investigators, the alleged scheme stretched across a period of approximately 17 years, during which the suspect reportedly flew thousands of flights carrying passengers on domestic and international routes. Authorities say the case raises serious concerns about aviation oversight, regulatory compliance, and safety verification processes within the industry.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that the charges include fraud, forgery, and endangering public safety. Officials stated that the investigation was launched after irregularities were discovered in the pilot’s credentials during a routine review of aviation records and licensing documentation.

Air Canada has acknowledged the investigation and said it is cooperating fully with authorities. The airline emphasized that it has strict hiring and verification procedures for pilots and is conducting an internal review to determine how the alleged deception was not detected earlier.

Aviation regulators in Canada have also launched a parallel inquiry into certification processes and oversight mechanisms to determine whether systemic gaps allowed the individual to operate undetected for such an extended period.

Authorities said the suspect’s alleged actions represent a significant breach of trust in the aviation system, given the critical responsibility pilots hold for passenger safety. Officials stressed that aviation licensing standards are designed to ensure that only fully qualified and properly certified individuals operate commercial aircraft.

Security and aviation experts have described the case as highly unusual, noting that airline pilot certification typically involves rigorous training, examinations, and continuous validation. They say the incident could prompt stricter verification procedures across the global aviation industry.

Passengers who may have flown with the suspect over the years have expressed shock at the revelations, with some calling for transparency regarding how such a breach could occur within a major international airline.

The accused is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks as legal proceedings begin, while investigators continue to examine the full extent of the alleged fraud and its potential implications for airline safety oversight.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
