17 children killed, properties destroyed as fire guts Islamic school in Zamfara

A devastating fire outbreak has claimed the lives of 17 children in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to information available to Diaspora digital media (DDM), the inferno occurred at Islamiya Islamic School on Tuesday night, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
Seventeen other children sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started while the children were asleep, trapping many inside the burning building.
Efforts were made to rescue them, but several victims suffered fatal burns before the flames were extinguished.
The spokesman for the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the tragic incident to journalists on Wednesday.
He stated that 17 children died in the fire, while 17 others are being treated for injuries.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
“Yes, the incident happened. Seventeen victims were killed, and 17 others are on admission,” Abubakar stated.
A resident, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, confirmed that the fire was triggered by stored sticks, locally known as kara.
The fire broke out in Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside the study hall where the children were resting.
“There were about 100 children in the building when the fire started,” Kaura explained.
After rescuing some children, they assumed no one was left inside.
“When they returned, they started seeing burnt hands and legs of those who couldn’t escape,” he said.
The inferno destroyed books, furniture, and other valuable materials within the school premises.
Parents and residents expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of the children.
Authorities assured the public that thorough investigations will uncover the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
The injured children are receiving medical care, and efforts are underway to support affected families.
This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves across Zamfara State, leaving many mourning the tragic deaths of the victims.
