ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has announced that 65 out of the 69 Nigerian ambassadors-designate nominated for diplomatic postings have received approval from their respective host countries, marking significant progress in the country’s ongoing diplomatic appointments.
Government officials disclosed that the approvals followed the completion of the diplomatic process known as agrément, through which host nations formally accept foreign ambassadors before they assume their duties. According to the government, the development reflects the positive diplomatic relations Nigeria maintains with many countries around the world.
The Federal Government explained that only a few ambassadorial appointments remain outstanding, with discussions continuing between Nigeria and the affected countries. Officials expressed confidence that the remaining approvals would be secured through established diplomatic channels.
The government noted that obtaining agrément is an essential step in international diplomacy and must be completed before an ambassador-designate can officially present letters of credence to the head of state of the receiving country and begin full diplomatic responsibilities.
Officials said the ambassadors-designate are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s bilateral relationships, promote trade and investment opportunities, protect the interests of Nigerian citizens abroad and deepen cooperation in areas such as security, education, technology and economic development.
