Abuja renews clampdown on commercial bike operation as part of security measure

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken a firm stance on enhancing security within the nation’s capital by cracking down on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as ‘Okada,’ through its Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS).
With upsurge in unemployment in Nigeria, most people took to commercial motor cycling.
The country currently ranks within first ten countries with highest number of commercial motorbike population.
But the demography has come with security and urban renewal challenges for most municipal managers in Nigeria.
Dr. Abdulateef Bello, the Director of DRTS, reiterated the zero-tolerance approach towards the proliferation of commercial motorcycles during an enforcement exercise in Kabusa, Abuja on Wednesday.
Bello emphasized the escalating threat posed by commercial motorcycles in the city, which has evolved from a mere traffic violation to a serious security concern, prompting government intervention.
He highlighted the reckless driving behaviors of Okada riders, including driving against traffic, which has led to an increase in road accidents.
The DRTS, in collaboration with other agencies, is intensifying efforts to rein in their activities and ensure the safety of residents, particularly in areas like Kabusa known for criminal activities.
The crackdown on commercial motorcycles is aimed at curbing criminality and insecurity within the FCT, as emphasized by Dr. Peter Olumuji, the Secretary, Command and Control, FCTA.
Recent arrests of kidnapping suspects have revealed the use of commercial motorcycles as a means of quick escape, underscoring the need to enforce the ban to safeguard FCT residents.
The enforcement operation has targeted areas such as Kubwa, Airport Road, Apo, and Lokogoma, where criminal activities involving Okada riders have been reported.
Residents engaging in motorcycle businesses are urged to comply with the ban on Okada within the city center and operate only in designated areas in satellite towns.
The FCTA’s efforts to enhance security by cracking down on commercial motorcycles demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in the nation’s capital.
The collaborative approach with various agencies underscores the seriousness with which the government is addressing the menace of commercial motorcycles and its impact on security within the FCT.
