A soldier, Private (Pte) Roger Bayuo, has reportedly accidentally shot himself to death with the service rifle at his disposal in Ghana.
Private Bayuo, according to local media reports, died instantly of gunshot wound at a military base in Accra, the national capital.
The Herald Ghana reported that Bayuo, who was stationed at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) near Michel Camp, was thought to have shot himself on Wednesday evening.
The army, in a statement on Saturday wherein it described the incident as “accidental”, indicated that the soldier’s rifle went off, killing him instantly;
The statement said: “Preliminary investigative report indicates the soldier was seen sitting on his bed, waiting to relieve his colleague at a duty post at 0800 hours when his rifle went off hitting him under his chin; killing him instantly.”
The body of the deceased soldier has since been conveyed to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.
“A team from the Homicide Unit of Ghana Police (GBETSELE Police Station) is collaborating with the Military Police to investigate the fatal incident”, the statement further noted. Read more.
