Haiti’s transitional council marked the third anniversary of President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination on Sunday.

Prime Minister Garry Conille and nine council members attended a Mass celebration to honor the late president.

On July 7, 2021, President Moïse was shot 12 times and killed by a squad of gunmen who invaded his home in Port-au-Prince, also wounding his wife, Martine Moise.

Several arrests have been made, including 11 men in U.S. custody and 18 former Colombian soldiers in Haiti.

Prosecutors in the U.S. allege a broad plot to hire mercenaries and remove Moïse, with investigations ongoing.

Since the assassination, Haiti has experienced a surge in gang violence, displacing thousands, including 300,000 children, according to UNICEF.

The first U.N.-backed contingent of foreign police arrived in Haiti in late June to quell the violence.

Haiti’s transitional council vows to continue investigations until all those involved in Moïse’s assassination are detained.

The country remains vulnerable, with gangs controlling 80% of the capital. The council’s president, Edgard Leblanc Fils, reiterated the commitment to justice and stability.
