Chelsea began their Carabao Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, with new signing Danny Welbeck scoring on his competitive debut before Hakeem Odoffin’s own goal sealed the win for the Blues.
The victory gave Xabi Alonso his first competitive home win as Chelsea manager and ensured the Premier League side progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Leeds United.
Chelsea came into the second-round tie as strong favourites against League One opponents Luton, but the visitors made life difficult for the hosts during a goalless first half.
Alonso made several changes to his starting XI, providing opportunities for players to impress while still fielding a strong enough team to avoid an early Carabao Cup upset. Chelsea controlled possession from the opening stages and spent long periods camped inside Luton’s half.

The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes after the restart when Welbeck announced himself to the Stamford Bridge crowd in perfect fashion.
Chelsea took the lead in the 50th minute after Malo Gusto delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Welbeck reacted quickly, meeting the delivery with a well-placed header from close range and sending the ball beyond Keeley.
The goal was an important moment for Chelsea and an even more memorable one for Welbeck, who marked his competitive debut for the club with a goal. The experienced striker’s movement and aerial ability immediately provided Chelsea with another dimension in attack.
Having taken the lead, Chelsea continued to dominate possession and searched for a second goal that would put the result beyond doubt.
Luton goalkeeper Keeley remained one of the visitors’ best players, making several important interventions to keep his side within touching distance of an equaliser.
Palmer continued to pose a threat, producing eight attempts and creating five chances as Chelsea maintained pressure on Luton.
The second goal eventually arrived in the 79th minute, although Chelsea needed a slice of fortune to extend their advantage.
Estêvão played a key role in the attacking move before the ball found its way into the danger area. His effort was deflected by Luton defender Hakeem Odoffin and ended up in the back of his own net, giving Chelsea a 2-0 lead.
The own goal effectively ended Luton’s hopes of forcing the match into a more competitive finish. Chelsea remained in control during the final stages and could have added another goal before the final whistle.
Jamie Gittens struck the post in stoppage time, while Palmer and João Pedro also tested Keeley as Chelsea continued to create opportunities.
Despite failing to score more than twice, Chelsea’s overall performance was enough to secure a comfortable victory and passage into the next round.
For Alonso, the result represents another positive step during the early stages of his Chelsea reign. After beginning the Premier League season with a 3-2 victory over Fulham, the Spanish manager has now overseen another important win as he continues to establish his style and develop his squad.
Welbeck’s debut was arguably the biggest positive from the evening. The 35-year-old showed that his experience could prove valuable for Chelsea, particularly in matches where opponents defend deep and aerial presence inside the penalty area becomes important.
Estêvão also impressed with his involvement in Chelsea’s second goal, while Gusto’s delivery for the opener highlighted the attacking quality Chelsea can produce from wide areas.
The victory was also significant because of the opportunities it provided for several members of Alonso’s squad. With Chelsea competing on multiple fronts this season, squad depth will be crucial, and performances in the Carabao Cup could influence the manager’s selection decisions in the weeks ahead.
