Lawmaker, district head nabbed over banditry

A member of Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Kaura Namoda Constituency, Honourable Aminu Ibrahim has landed in police net over allegations of banditry and kidnapping.

The arrest was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Muhammad Shehu Dalijan.

In addition to Ibrahim, the District Head of Kaura Namoda, Alhaji Jafaru Abdullahi Kumburki, and a former chairman of the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Nasiru Muhammad, are also under arrest for similar allegations.

The police are investigating three other district heads from Danjibga, Bukkuyum, and Unguwar Gyauro in Tsafe and Bukkuyum LGAs.

The police commissioner revealed that the district head of Kaura Namoda allegedly colluded with suspected bandits’ collaborators, Alhaji Bala and Hali Sidi, to kidnap nine people in Gidan Sambo village. The trio reportedly collected an N800,000 ransom before releasing their captives.

Ibrahim, the serving lawmaker, is accused of involvement in the kidnapping of 80-year-old Alhaji Ibrahim Sarkin Fada from Kasuwar Daji village. Similarly, the former chairman of Kaura Namoda LGA is alleged to have conspired with Bala and Sidi to kidnap Alhaji Ango of Kumurya village.

CP Dalijan stated, “The district heads of Danjibga, Unguwar Gyauro, and Bukkuyum will face an investigative panel set up by the state government over their involvement in banditry activities. The police have conducted an investigation and submitted their report to the state governor for further action.”

Hon. Bello Mazawaje, Majority Leader of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, confirmed Ibrahim’s arrest, stating, “I can confirm to you that Hon. Ibrahim, a serving member of this honorable house, is being investigated by the police on allegations related to banditry.”

The arrests of prominent figures, including a state lawmaker and local officials, highlight the deep-rooted challenges of banditry and kidnapping in Zamfara State.
