The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed Sunday Udeh-Okoye as its National Secretary, following a Court of Appeal verdict.
In December, the appellate court in Enugu sacked Senator Samuel Anyanwu and recognized Udeh-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary.
Briefing journalists in Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba stated the party recognizes Udeh-Okoye as the authentic national secretary.
“On December 24, 2023, we confirmed receipt of the appeal court’s judgment affirming Udeh-Okoye as the party’s national secretary,” he said.
“We are a rule of law-compliant party; we believe in this finality of the judicial process. We have always respected judicial pronouncements and will always abide by that culture. The position of the party has not changed regarding that.
“In accordance with our position in the past as a rule of law-compliant party, we are obeying the court’s order. We will follow the process and ensure full compliance with the pronouncement of the court of appeal.
“We have received the judgment of the court of appeal that affirmed Ude-Okoye as national secretary of PDP, and as a party, we are bound by that judgment.”
Ologunagba strongly condemned the attack on a journalist covering the party’s activities; consequently, this incident involved a loyal staff member of the embattled national secretary.
He vowed that the party will implement disciplinary measures once they complete the investigations, ensuring accountability for all involved.
The PDP leadership reviewed a troubling report concerning Mr. Emmanuel Okoronkwo, who assaulted Sun Newspapers correspondent Mr. Ndubuisi Orji yesterday.
“The party condemns this violence and dissociates from attacks on the Press, which is vital for democracy and transparency.”
“Although the PDP Secretariat remains closed for holiday activities, the Press still requires access to perform its legitimate duties.
“Additionally, Mr. Emmanuel Okoronkwo does not belong to the security department. He acted independently and violated democratic principles established by PDP.”
“The PDP firmly defends constitutional press freedom and will not condone actions that infringe upon the media’s legitimate rights.”
“The NWC promises to address this issue according to the party’s Code of Conduct, thereby deterring any future unacceptable behavior.
“The PDP expresses regret over the incident, emphasizing respect for the Press and commitment to accountability and democratic values in Nigeria.”
