House of Reps Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi dies, Senator Kalu mourns

A member of the House of Representatives and Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Oriyomi Adewunmi Onanuga is dead.

Oriyomi Adewunmi Onanuga who represented Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency died after a brief illness at the age of 60.

The lawmaker who was born on December 2, 1965, in Hammersmith, London, to Nigerian parents, had a distinguished career as a politician and entrepreneur.

She first won her seat in the House of Representatives in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip, a role in which she demonstrated her commitment to effective legislative governance.

During her tenure, Onanuga also served as chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development.

She was a strong advocate for gender equality and societal welfare, championing key policies aimed at empowering women and improving social infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Hon. Adewunmi.

Kalu in his tribute, described her death as a “shocking and devastating loss.”

He highlighted her contributions to governance and her role as a strong advocate for women’s inclusion in politics.

“The loss of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga is a big blow. She served her people with passion and dedication and will be greatly missed,” Kalu said.

He extended condolences on behalf of the people of Abia North Senatorial District to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Onanuga’s family, and the people of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency.
