NERC announces 2025 essay contest for senior secondary students

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially opened its 2025 Essay Competition, inviting Senior Secondary School Year Two (SS2) students nationwide to participate.

Through this initiative, young minds can demonstrate their creativity and critical thinking skills. An NERC representative announced the competition via Twitter on May 16, 2025, sparking excitement among students and educators.

This year’s theme, *”Electricity Theft: Implications and Consequences in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry,”* challenges students to explore a pressing national issue. By examining the effects of electricity theft, participants will propose solutions to strengthen the power sector. The competition not only fosters awareness but also encourages problem-solving among future leaders.

Eligibility and Participation

All SS2 students in public and private schools are eligible to enter the competition. To qualify, participants must submit well-researched, original essays that address the theme comprehensively. NERC emphasizes clarity, depth of analysis, and innovative ideas in submissions.

Exciting Prizes for Outstanding Performers

To motivate participants, NERC has announced generous cash rewards for the top three winners, their teachers, and their schools. Additionally, ten runners-up will receive consolation prizes.
