(DDM) – Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has appealed to the Federal Government to prioritise the revival of major seaports in the state.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the governor specifically mentioned Warri, Koko, Sapele and Burutu ports as critical to the region’s economic transformation.
He stated that restoring these maritime facilities would unlock Delta State’s full economic potential and boost Nigeria’s position as a regional trade hub.
According to Oborevwori, modern and functional ports are vital for trade expansion, industrial growth, and large-scale job creation across the Niger Delta.
The governor called for urgent federal action to upgrade infrastructure, strengthen security measures, and streamline operations at the affected ports.
He emphasised that the maritime sector holds untapped revenue opportunities capable of significantly contributing to national development and economic stability.
Stakeholders across the state have welcomed the governor’s appeal, noting that port revival would attract foreign investment and stimulate local businesses.
Experts argue that efficient port systems would also reduce congestion at Lagos ports, improving turnaround times for shipping and logistics.
Oborevwori highlighted that revitalising Delta’s ports aligns with his administration’s long-term vision of economic diversification and infrastructural renewal.
He maintained that federal-state collaboration would ensure strategic planning and sustainable management of port facilities once operational.
Economic analysts have also pointed out that the revival of these ports would open new export routes for agricultural produce, solid minerals, and manufactured goods.
Local communities view the governor’s call as a significant step toward transforming Delta State into a leading economic corridor in Nigeria.
They expressed optimism that the Federal Government would respond positively to the demand, given the sector’s potential for revenue expansion.
Security agencies and maritime unions are reportedly engaging in discussions to address existing challenges and prepare for potential port reactivation.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to partner with federal authorities and private investors to achieve the project’s objectives.
He concluded that restoring the ports is not just an economic imperative but a legacy move for future generations.
