(DDM) – Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has strongly condemned a violent attack on his convoy in Birnin Kebbi, describing the incident as “politically motivated and deeply troubling for Nigeria’s democracy.”
The attack reportedly occurred on Monday afternoon while Malami was visiting families who had recently lost loved ones in the Kebbi State capital.
DDM gathered that a group of suspected political thugs ambushed the convoy, vandalising about ten vehicles and leaving several supporters injured during the confrontation.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with vehicles smashed and passengers fleeing for safety as attackers blocked sections of the road.
Malami, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2023, criticised what he called “a dangerous trend of political intimidation” and urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
He warned that failure to address politically motivated violence could deepen public mistrust in democratic processes and escalate tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), which Malami represented while in government, has denied involvement in the attack, insisting Kebbi remains largely peaceful despite isolated incidents of political rivalry.
Party spokespersons urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice, while dismissing suggestions of an internal rift within the APC as speculation.
Police authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but preliminary reports indicate detectives have been deployed to trace those responsible and review surveillance footage from nearby areas.
Political observers say the attack underscores the volatile nature of grassroots politics in parts of northern Nigeria, where contest for influence has occasionally turned violent.
Analysts also note that Malami remains an influential figure in Kebbi State politics, with loyalists viewing the attack as an attempt to silence his growing political relevance in the post-ministerial period.
Civil society organisations have condemned the incident, urging the Inspector General of Police to establish a high-level probe panel to prevent a recurrence and safeguard Nigeria’s fragile democratic environment.
As investigations continue, residents of Birnin Kebbi are calling for increased security patrols, especially during political gatherings and visits by high-profile personal
