The Anambra State Police Command, however, responded swiftly and successfully rescued the man before tragedy struck.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that officers attached to the Awada Division carried out the intervention.

According to Ikenga, the police received a distress call alerting them about the incident. Officers immediately mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area to prevent accidents, and controlled the growing crowd.

Many residents stood in fear as they watched the man remain on the high-tension pole, risking electrocution.

For several tense minutes, police operatives and some concerned citizens engaged the man in calm persuasion.

After continued appeals, he eventually climbed down from the pole.

The police immediately took him into protective custody for his safety.

He later identified himself and disclosed his age while at the station.

Ikenga explained that the state commissioner of police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had directed that the man undergo both medical and mental health evaluations.

The commissioner also assured that the command would provide necessary support to aid the man’s recovery and ensure his well-being.

In his message to the public, CP Orutugu urged Nigerians to seek peaceful and lawful ways of addressing personal struggles rather than resorting to extreme measures.

He encouraged people facing difficulties to reach out to trusted family members, friends, or professional support groups when overwhelmed.

The incident highlights the growing concern around mental health issues in Nigeria, where stigma and lack of awareness often prevent individuals from seeking timely help.

Mental health professionals have repeatedly called for increased public education, counseling services, and community support systems to reduce cases of depression and suicide attempts.

The swift action of the Anambra police prevented what could have been a tragic loss of life.

Residents expressed relief at the successful rescue, describing it as a reminder of the need for collective efforts in tackling mental health challenges in society.
