Sanwo-Olu unblocks lawyer on X after peace meeting

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unblocked human rights lawyer Festus Ogun on X after a private meeting at Lagos House, Marina, on Friday.

Ogun, who previously accused the governor of infringing on his rights by blocking him, confirmed the development on Instagram on Saturday, stating that the governor personally invited him for a dialogue to address the grievance.

“Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unblocked me on X (Twitter). I met briefly with him yesterday at Lagos House Marina, on his invitation, to amicably resolve my complaint of human rights violations. We will continue to hold authorities accountable, regardless. Aluta continua!” Ogun wrote.

The move comes after Ogun filed a lawsuit against Sanwo-Olu at the Federal High Court in Lagos, accusing him of violating his fundamental rights by blocking him since 2021.

Ogun argued that the block stemmed from his critical comments and demands for accountability over the October 2020 #EndSARS killings.

He claimed the action denied him access to public updates and governance information, which he described as unconstitutional, arbitrary, and discriminatory.

In his suit, Ogun requested the court to compel the governor to unblock him, issue a public apology, and stop targeting critics online. He emphasized that the issue transcended personal grievance, calling it a matter of defending democratic values.

Ogun also referenced a 2019 U.S. court ruling that declared blocking critics on social media unconstitutional, underscoring the importance of tolerating dissent in governance.
