The convener of Igbo Youths in Diaspora has weighed in on the trending Christian genocide in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Tuesday which a copy was made to Diaspora Digital Media, Chukwuemeziem Ekete said that the Nigerian government’s years of silence led to the Christian genocide tag.
The statement reads: “You should know that as Igbo, we represent the Christian population of the African most populous country. When Christianity comes under threat, the Igbo man is put in harm’s way as well.
“Since 2009 the issue of Boko Haram dawned on us; the government of the day and successive governments refused to give priority attention to the menace and subsequent attack on religious institutions and people.
“Boko Haram has metamorphosed into various terrorist organizations and even attracted international terrorist organizations because our governments could not nip the issue in the bud.
“Churches are burnt, and Christians are killed in significant numbers. Even recently, our minister that spoke on Piers Morgan’s platform couldn’t get hold of the count, and that shows to the world that the government doesn’t care.
“Complacency and inaction are two of the many reasons the USA decided to come in and do the job the government couldn’t do. The world can’t stand idly by while a particular religion’s adherents are killed significantly without government action.
“Donald Trump gave the government a window to make it right. I believe had Trump intended to strike, he would have done that without warning, but issuing a warning means he wants our government to take action.
“President Tinubu must caution his cabinet members to stop defending terrorists or justifying the killing of Christians in Nigeria; instead, they should devise a way to combat the perpetrators and prove to the USA the government of the day can handle the issue internally.
“This government and previous ones brought the anger of the USA with silence while killings and destruction of churches go on across the country.
“There is truly a Christian genocide going on in Nigeria, and we are concerned about it and want action to end it. Whether the action comes from the UN or the US, we don’t care. Whether it comes from the Nigerian government, we don’t care. All we want is action to end years of demeaning silence, which emboldened the perpetrators.
