President Donald Trump has warned Iran that US could take drastic action against one of its most critical energy assets if tensions in the Gulf escalate further.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the United States would destroy Iran’s South Pars gas field if Tehran carries out another attack on Qatar’s key gas infrastructure.
His remarks followed reports that Israel had struck the South Pars field, a massive offshore gas reserve shared by Iran and Qatar. Trump, however, said the U.S. had no prior knowledge of the strike.
The reported attack appears to have triggered a response from Iran, which targeted Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial facility a central hub for the country’s liquefied natural gas exports.
Reacting to the development, Trump issued a strongly worded warning, saying further Iranian action against what he described as an “innocent” Qatar would provoke a massive U.S. response.
He added that any retaliation could be carried out with or without Israel’s involvement, underlining Washington’s readiness to act independently if necessary.
The South Pars field is one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves and a cornerstone of both Iran’s and Qatar’s energy sectors.
Any significant damage to the facility could have far-reaching implications for global energy markets.
Trump’s comments come at a time of rising tensions across the Middle East, with attacks on critical infrastructure increasing and fears growing of a wider regional conflict.
Analysts say the latest exchange of threats could further destabilise an already volatile situation, particularly as energy supplies and shipping routes remain under pressure.
