(DDM) — The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has stepped up enforcement efforts against illegal cart pushers in Lagos, as part of ongoing measures to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and improve environmental sanitation across the state.
The agency confirmed that at least one suspect has been arrested during recent operations targeting individuals engaged in unauthorized waste collection and dumping activities. Officials say the crackdown is aimed at restoring order to the state’s waste management system and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
According to LAWMA authorities, illegal cart pushers have continued to undermine structured waste disposal processes by dumping refuse in drains, road medians, and other unauthorized locations. This practice, they noted, contributes significantly to environmental pollution, flooding, and public health risks, especially during the rainy season.
The agency emphasized that only registered and approved waste operators are permitted to collect and dispose of refuse within Lagos State. Residents and business owners were advised to patronize accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) to ensure proper waste management and avoid sanctions.
Environmental officials further warned that individuals caught engaging in illegal waste disposal activities would face prosecution in accordance with existing environmental laws. They stressed that enforcement would be sustained and expanded to cover more areas, as part of a broader strategy to sanitize the city.
The renewed crackdown comes amid growing concerns over waste management challenges in Lagos, a densely populated commercial hub where rapid urbanization has placed pressure on infrastructure and sanitation systems. Experts say effective waste management is critical to preventing disease outbreaks, maintaining public health, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
Authorities also highlighted the role of public cooperation in achieving lasting results, urging residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits and report illegal activities to the appropriate agencies. They noted that community participation is essential to sustaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
In addition, LAWMA reiterated its commitment to strengthening waste management operations through improved monitoring, increased public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with other government agencies. The agency assured residents that efforts are ongoing to enhance efficiency and ensure that waste collection services meet the needs of the growing population.
As enforcement activities intensify, stakeholders believe that consistent action against illegal cart pushers, combined with public compliance and education, will play a crucial role in addressing the state’s sanitation challenges and promoting environmental sustainability.
