(DDM) – The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has presented a framework to the Nigerian Senate outlining plans for the establishment of state police across the country.

The proposal is part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture and address persistent challenges in law enforcement.

According to the police chief, the framework is designed to support the decentralisation of policing, allowing states to play a more active role in maintaining security.

He explained that the initiative aims to improve response times, intelligence gathering, and community-based policing.

The submission to the Senate marks a significant step in the national conversation on restructuring the country’s policing system.

For years, stakeholders have debated the need for state police as a way to tackle rising insecurity in various parts of Nigeria.

Proponents argue that a decentralised system would enable quicker and more effective responses to local security threats.

They also believe that state-controlled police units would better understand community dynamics and cultural contexts.

However, critics have raised concerns about the potential misuse of state police by political leaders.

Some fear that governors could deploy such forces to suppress opposition or influence electoral processes.

The proposed framework is expected to address these concerns by outlining safeguards, operational guidelines, and oversight mechanisms.

Lawmakers in the Senate are likely to review the proposal and consider necessary legislative steps required for its implementation.

The move may also involve constitutional amendments, as policing is currently under the exclusive control of the federal government.

Security experts say the success of state police will depend on transparency, accountability, and proper funding structures.

The federal government has in recent years faced increasing pressure to adopt new strategies to combat crime and insecurity nationwide.

The submission of the framework signals a willingness by the police leadership to explore structural reforms.

As deliberations begin, stakeholders across the country are expected to engage in discussions on the feasibility and implications of state policing.

The outcome of the process could significantly reshape Nigeria’s security landscape in the coming years.
