Nigeria has recorded 25,098 newly confirmed HIV-positive cases between January and March 2026, according to newly released data, raising fresh concerns about the country’s ongoing fight against the virus.

The figures show that Lagos State reported the highest number of cases at 2,298, followed by Benue State with 1,949 and Akwa Ibom State with 1,159. The data highlights persistent transmission hotspots across both densely populated urban centres and rural communities.

Other states with significant case numbers include Rivers State (1,137), Anambra State (1,013), and Kaduna State (842), pointing to a widespread national burden that cuts across multiple regions.

In the South-West, Oyo State recorded 763 cases, while Ogun State reported 751. Delta State also featured prominently in the South-South region with 803 cases. Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory recorded 579 cases, reflecting the continued impact of HIV in major urban areas.

In the North-Central and North-East regions, Plateau State (662), Nasarawa State (615), Taraba State (605), and Adamawa State (382) also reported notable figures, indicating ongoing transmission challenges in those areas.

Health experts warn that the rising numbers underscore the need for intensified awareness, expanded testing, and improved access to treatment nationwide, particularly in high-burden states.
