LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of a section of the Eko Bridge in Lagos State as it begins the reconstruction of the ₦545 billion Carter Bridge project, citing urgent structural concerns and safety considerations.

The decision marks the formal commencement of the long-awaited overhaul of one of Lagos’s key transport corridors, which connects critical commercial and residential areas within the city.

Authorities explained that the closure became necessary to allow engineers and contractors to carry out preliminary construction and safety assessments without risk to motorists.

The Federal Government stated that the project is aimed at replacing or significantly upgrading the aging Carter Bridge to improve durability and traffic flow.

Officials noted that the current structure has experienced years of wear and tear due to heavy usage and environmental conditions.

The reconstruction is expected to significantly ease congestion in Lagos, one of Africa’s most densely populated and economically active cities.

Transport experts say the closure of parts of Eko Bridge may initially cause traffic disruptions, but long-term benefits are expected once the project is completed.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes while construction activities progress, as traffic management plans are being implemented to reduce gridlock.

Government engineers emphasized that safety remains the top priority, especially given concerns about the structural integrity of existing bridge infrastructure in Lagos.

The project is part of broader infrastructure renewal efforts aimed at modernising transportation networks across the country.

Lagos residents have long expressed concerns about traffic congestion and aging infrastructure, making the project a significant development for commuters and businesses.

Authorities assured that adequate measures are in place to minimise inconvenience during the construction period.

The Ministry of Works reiterated its commitment to delivering a durable and efficient bridge that meets modern engineering standards.

Analysts say the project could improve connectivity between Lagos Island and mainland areas, boosting economic activities in the region.

However, they also caution that effective traffic management will be crucial during the construction phase to avoid prolonged disruption.

The Federal Government urged patience from residents, stressing that the short-term inconvenience will lead to long-term infrastructural benefits.

As construction begins, attention will focus on project execution, funding management, and adherence to timelines for completion.
