MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA — Nigerian troops have recorded a significant operational breakthrough in Borno State after killing a senior Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commander, while two other high-profile fighters reportedly surrendered to the military during ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
Security sources said the operation took place in parts of the North-East theatre where troops have continued offensive actions against insurgent groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin and Sambisa axis.
According to military officials, the slain ISWAP leader was neutralised during a coordinated engagement with troops, dealing what authorities described as a major setback to the terrorist organisation’s command structure in the region.
In a separate but related development, two ISWAP commanders are said to have voluntarily surrendered to Nigerian forces, citing sustained military pressure and dwindling operational capacity within their ranks.
