LAGOS, Nigeria — A coalition of civil society organisations, labour groups, youth associations, community bodies, social movements, and faith-based organisations on Friday staged a protest in Lagos State, expressing concern over worsening insecurity and the rising cost of living in the country.

The demonstration brought together a broad cross-section of participants who marched through designated areas of the city, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards highlighting their grievances. Protesters said the current economic situation has placed significant pressure on households, with inflation and high food prices making daily survival increasingly difficult for many Nigerians.

The coalition said the protest was aimed at drawing government attention to what they described as a deepening national crisis affecting both urban and rural communities. They argued that insecurity in several parts of the country has disrupted livelihoods, reduced agricultural productivity, and contributed to food shortages, further worsening the economic burden on citizens.

Organisers of the demonstration stressed that the protest was peaceful and intended to amplify the voices of ordinary Nigerians struggling with unemployment, rising transportation costs, and declining purchasing power. They called for urgent policy interventions to address what they described as systemic economic and security failures.

Participants also highlighted concerns about youth unemployment, noting that many young people are unable to find stable jobs despite being educated. They warned that continued economic hardship could lead to increased frustration among the population if not addressed through effective government policies.

Security presence was observed in key areas of the protest route to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order. Authorities monitored the situation closely, ensuring that the demonstration remained within peaceful limits while traffic movement was managed to reduce disruption to commuters.

The coalition further called on government at all levels to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence, which they said have become major threats to national stability. They also urged policymakers to implement stronger social welfare measures to cushion the effects of inflation on vulnerable households.

Despite the challenges raised, organisers reaffirmed their commitment to civic engagement and democratic expression, stating that peaceful protest remains a constitutional right and a vital tool for accountability in governance. They urged authorities to engage with citizens’ concerns and take concrete steps toward improving living conditions across the country.
