Endocrinologist Urges Men to Embrace PSA Tests for Early Prostate Cancer Detection

LAGOS, Nigeria — An endocrinologist, Dr. Taiwo Opeyemi Alabi, has advised men to prioritise regular prostate screening, particularly through Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing, as part of efforts to improve early detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

Alabi stressed that prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting men and continues to pose a significant public health challenge due to late diagnosis in many cases. He noted that early detection greatly increases the chances of successful treatment and better health outcomes.

According to the medical expert, routine screening can help identify abnormalities before symptoms become severe, allowing healthcare professionals to intervene at an early stage. He encouraged men, especially those above the age of 40 and individuals with a family history of prostate cancer, to consult healthcare providers about appropriate screening schedules.

Prostate cancer develops in the prostate gland, a small organ in the male reproductive system responsible for producing fluid that forms part of semen. While the disease may initially progress without obvious symptoms, it can become life-threatening if not detected and treated promptly.

Alabi explained that the PSA test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. Elevated PSA levels may indicate prostate cancer or other prostate-related conditions, prompting further medical evaluation. He emphasized that the test remains an important tool in the early identification of potential health concerns.

The endocrinologist noted that many men avoid routine medical check-ups due to fear, misinformation, or cultural attitudes toward health issues. He warned that delaying screening could result in diagnoses occurring only after the disease has advanced, reducing treatment options and increasing health risks.

He further called for increased public awareness campaigns to educate men about prostate health and the importance of preventive healthcare. According to him, greater awareness would help reduce stigma surrounding medical examinations and encourage more men to seek timely medical advice.

Health experts have consistently identified early detection as one of the most effective strategies for reducing deaths associated with prostate cancer. Medical professionals say regular screening, healthy lifestyle choices, and prompt attention to unusual symptoms can significantly improve outcomes for patients.

Alabi also urged government agencies, healthcare institutions, and non-governmental organisations to intensify efforts aimed at promoting prostate health education across communities. He said accessible screening programmes and public health initiatives would help ensure that more men receive the information and services needed to protect their health.

As awareness of prostate cancer continues to grow, medical experts maintain that regular screening and early diagnosis remain critical in reducing the burden of the disease. They encourage men to view preventive healthcare as an essential part of maintaining long-term well-being and improving quality of life.
