Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz once more, accusing the United States of failing to honour key terms of the agreement signed earlier this week between President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
According to a report by the New York Post, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made the announcement on Friday through a statement broadcast on maritime radio channels.
The IRGC said the continued presence of US forces in the Gulf region and Israel’s refusal to withdraw troops from southern Lebanon amount to violations of the memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran.
It said the strategic waterway would remain closed until those conditions were met.
“Since Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, the complete lifting of the naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American terrorist forces from the Persian Gulf and the region are among the main conditions of the agreement between Iran and the United States, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until these conditions are met,” the statement said.
The IRGC also warned vessels against approaching the waterway, saying any ship that ignored the directive would be targeted.
In a separate statement, the IRGC-linked Tasnim News Agency argued that the agreement had effectively lost its relevance as long as Israel continued military operations and maintained a presence in southern Lebanon.
“The continuation of Israeli crimes and the occupation of Lebanese land signify the death of the agreement, and this must not be tolerated or overlooked,” the agency said.
The development came shortly after Switzerland announced the postponement of follow-up talks linked to the agreement, which was designed to end the conflict between the US and Iran, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and create a 60-day window for negotiations on broader issues, including Tehran’s nuclear programme.
The deal was also expected to help bring an end to hostilities in Lebanon, but Israel on Friday announced fresh strikes on what it described as Hezbollah targets in the country’s south.
Under the agreement, Iran was also expected to receive a $300 billion reconstruction package from the United States.
Meanwhile, Trump insisted Iran was in a weakened position despite the diplomatic breakthrough.
In a post on Truth Social, the US president said Iran had been “finished” in the confrontation and rejected suggestions that Washington had negotiated from a position of weakness.
Trump said the United States would allow the 60-day negotiation period to proceed but ruled out providing additional financial assistance to Tehran.
“We’re not giving them ten cents,” he said.
