A legendary Nigerian music star, Charly Boy, has shared his traumatic childhood experiences in an interview with Muvmnt Studio, stating “I got gonorrhea at 12 after nanny raped me.”
According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the singer revealed that he was subjected to abuse by his nanny at a vulnerable age, but due to his innocence and naivety, he didn’t recognize the harm and exploitation at the time but instead saw it as pleasure.
He continued, ‘Tragically, this led to severe consequences, including contracting gonorrhea at just 12 years old.”

What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects both men and women, typically targeting the urethra (urine tube), Cervix (lower part of the uterus), rectum, and throat, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Symptoms
The symptoms of gonorrhea in men include burning sensation while urinating, yellowish or greenish discharge from the penis, painful or swollen testicles, and redness or swelling at the opening of the penis.
In women, the symptoms of gonorrhea include increased vaginal discharge or bleeding, painful urination, painful intercourse, and abdominal pain or cramping.
Asymptomatic Cases
Up to 50% of infected women and 10% of infected men show no symptoms.
Transmission
Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex and also from mother-to-child during childbirth.
Complications
The STD can lead to Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, epididymitis (testicle inflammation) in men, infertility, increased risk of HIV transmission, and gonococcal conjunctivitis (eye infection)
Diagnosis
It can be diagnosed through urine or swab tests and gram stain or culture.
Treatment
The disease can be treated with Antibiotics (usually dual therapy) and treatment of sexual partners.
Prevention
Condom use, monogamous relationships, regular STI testing, and vaccination against HPV (human papillomavirus) are all ways to prevent gonorrhea.
Epidemiology
There are over 500,000 reported cases annually in the US (CDC). It is mostly common among 15-24-year-olds with its
global prevalence of 106 million cases.
History
It was described by Hippocrates between 460-370 BCE and was named “gonorrhea” by Galen (129-216 CE).

Gonorrhea is also known as “the clap.” It was once treated with heavy metals like mercury and its antibiotic resistance is increasing.
