Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has reacted strongly to the recent chieftaincy title conferred on social commentator VeryDarkMan by the Oluwo of Iwo.
In a pointed statement, Seun Kuti warned that activists must be careful not to become what they once opposed.
“You’re gradually becoming the same oppressor you claim to be fighting against. It’s becoming clear for everyone to see that you’re turning into what you once criticized and stood against,” he said.
He further emphasized that adopting the same structures or privileges often associated with power could contradict the principles of activism.
“The moment you start doing the same things as those you call oppressors, you become one of them,” he added.
His remarks have sparked intense debate online. Some supporters agree with his stance, arguing that activists should remain independent and avoid aligning too closely with traditional or political power structures. Others, however, believe that recognition such as a chieftaincy title does not necessarily compromise one’s values or mission.
The conversation reflects a broader tension between activism and influence whether engaging with established systems is a strategic move for change or a step toward becoming part of the very system being challenged.
