The family of the late Mary Habila has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), requesting the release of her body for burial.
Diaspora Digital Media reported that Mary, a nurse whose death occurred at the residence of the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has remained in police custody as investigations continue.
Her father, Tanko Habila, accompanied by his wife, relatives and members of the family’s legal team, submitted the petition at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
Addressing journalists after filing the petition, the family’s lawyer said they were seeking the intervention of the police leadership to facilitate the release of Mary’s remains.
Speaking briefly, Tanko Habila lamented that nearly two weeks after his daughter’s death, the Ebonyi State Police Command had yet to hand over her body to the family.
He also made it clear that the family does not want an autopsy carried out on the deceased.
“As we are standing here, somebody can fall and die. It happens. All we want is for her body to be released so we can bury her,” he said.
The family appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to ensure the remains are released without further delay.
More details shortly.
