A soldier has died after troops repelled a terrorist ambush during a patrol in Tangaza LGA of Sokoto state.
Security sources according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert, said that troops from the forward operating base (FOB) Raka came under attack at about 5:30pm on July 14 while conducting a patrol around Zurmuku village.
Makama said the terrorists ambushed the patrol as it approached the area, but the troops responded with sustained firepower and successfully fought their way out of the attack.
“During the encounter, one soldier sustained gunshot wounds and was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries,” Makama said.
“Military authorities are continuing operations in the area to track down the attackers and prevent further terrorist activities.”
The latest attack comes barely three weeks after two soldiers were reportedly killed, and three others injured in another terrorist ambush in Isa LGA of Sokoto state.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 10pm on June 30 when troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, deployed at the FOB in Tidibale, responded to reports of a terrorist attack on Tagirke village.
After engaging the terrorists in a gun battle and forcing them to withdraw from the village, the troops were ambushed while pulling back from the area.
During the withdrawal, one of the military gun trucks struck an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in casualties among the troops.
Two soldiers were killed in the explosion, while three others sustained injuries.
