LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has called on tourism stakeholders to prioritise the protection of the environment, culture, and arts as part of a broader strategy to attract more visitors, grow the state’s tourism economy, and position Lagos as a premier destination for leisure, business, and cultural tourism.

The appeal was made by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture during a stakeholder engagement forum held on Thursday in Ikeja, where industry players, cultural practitioners, and environmental advocates gathered to discuss the future of tourism in the state. The government emphasised that sustainable tourism development must be anchored on the preservation of natural and cultural assets.

According to the ministry, Lagos is endowed with a rich cultural heritage, diverse artistic expressions, and natural attractions that remain underexploited. However, rapid urbanisation, environmental degradation, and neglect of cultural assets threaten the potential of the sector to generate revenue and create employment opportunities.

The government urged stakeholders, including hoteliers, tour operators, cultural organisations, and local communities, to adopt environmentally responsible practices and support the preservation of historical sites and traditional arts. It noted that visitors are increasingly drawn to destinations that offer authentic cultural experiences and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.

Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial capital and a melting pot of cultures, has the potential to become a leading tourism hub in Africa. The state government has invested in several initiatives to promote tourism, including the development of the Lagos Theatre, the Eko Atlantic City project, and the annual Lagos International Trade Fair. However, challenges such as pollution, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure continue to hinder the sector’s growth.

The stakeholder forum also addressed the need for improved security, better waste management, and the development of tourism infrastructure to support the growth of the sector. Participants called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to address these challenges and unlock the potential of Lagos’s tourism industry.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for tourism and cultural development, while encouraging stakeholders to leverage digital platforms and innovative marketing strategies to promote Lagos as a destination of choice. The government also pledged to strengthen regulatory frameworks to ensure that tourism development is sustainable and inclusive.

For now, the government remains committed to working with industry players to build a vibrant and sustainable tourism economy that benefits all residents and visitors alike.
