ABEOKUTA, Ogun State — Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, to remain focused on his 2027 governorship ambition and to seek divine direction and support as he pursues his political goal.
Obasanjo gave the counsel during a recent meeting with the Ogun West Senator and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, who has been widely endorsed as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State. The former president, known for his role as a political godfather in Ogun State, reportedly urged Adeola to stay the course and not be distracted by political intrigues.
According to sources close to the meeting, Obasanjo emphasised the importance of patience, strategic focus, and spiritual guidance in achieving political ambition. “Stay focused on your goal and seek divine direction,” the former president was quoted as saying. “Ambition without divine guidance can lead to frustration. You must be clear about what you want and trust in God to direct your path.”
Senator Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West in the Senate and chairs the Appropriations Committee, has had a long political career spanning over two decades. He has served in the Lagos State House of Assembly, the House of Representatives, and the Senate before making a strategic move to Ogun State to pursue his governorship ambition.
His emergence as the APC consensus candidate has been hailed by party leaders, including incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Governors Segun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun. Accepting the endorsement, Adeola pledged not to disappoint the party and promised to keep the state united and progressive.
Obasanjo’s counsel comes amid growing political activity in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 election, with various interest groups jostling for influence. The former president has remained an influential figure in the state’s politics, and his advice is seen as a significant endorsement of Adeola’s ambition.
The meeting underscores Obasanjo’s continued involvement in shaping the political landscape of Ogun State, despite his advanced age and retirement from active politics. His counsel to Adeola highlights the importance of strategic focus and spiritual alignment in the pursuit of political power, themes that resonate deeply in Nigerian political culture.
As the 2027 election approaches, Adeola is expected to intensify his consultations and build alliances across the state, while Obasanjo’s counsel will likely serve as a guiding principle for the senator’s campaign.
