The United States has carried out its 13th consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran, targeting military infrastructure in the latest phase of its expanding campaign against Tehran.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the overnight operation lasted more than two hours and focused on military assets it said posed a threat to commercial shipping and regional security.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes hit Iranian military command centres, drone storage facilities, communication networks, coastal surveillance sites and maritime capabilities.
“The operation was aimed at further reducing the threat Iran poses to civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” the command said in a statement.
The latest operation came hours after President Donald Trump warned Iran and its Houthi allies of “major military punishment” following attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, a move that has widened the conflict to another critical global shipping route.
Iran continues to maintain its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy corridors, adding to concerns over global oil supplies and regional stability.
The current conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran.
Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military bases.
Since then, the conflict has spread across the region, with fighting also intensifying in Lebanon. Thousands of people have been killed, while millions have been displaced.
Trump has also threatened to strike Iran’s energy infrastructure and bridges if Tehran continues its attacks.
Iran has warned that any such move would trigger retaliation against oil, gas, electricity and other critical economic facilities across the region.
Legal experts have previously cautioned that attacks on infrastructure essential to civilian life could violate the 1949 Geneva Conventions and potentially amount to war crimes under international humanitarian law.
Trump also drew international criticism earlier this year after threatening to destroy Iran’s “entire civilization” if hostilities escalated further.
