ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed claims that he lacks the capacity to unite Nigeria, insisting that his leadership record demonstrates his ability to bring Nigerians together regardless of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation.
Obi made the remarks while responding to critics who questioned his suitability to lead a diverse country like Nigeria. He maintained that national unity can only be achieved through inclusive governance, justice, fairness and equal opportunities for all citizens rather than divisive politics.
According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigeria’s current challenges require leaders who prioritize competence, accountability and national interest above personal or sectional considerations. He argued that building trust among Nigerians begins with transparent leadership and policies that address poverty, unemployment, insecurity and inequality.
Obi said his experience in public office reflects his commitment to peaceful coexistence and responsible governance. He noted that his administration in Anambra State focused on improving education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic development without discrimination, adding that such an approach remains central to his vision for the country.
The former presidential candidate stressed that Nigerians deserve leaders who can bridge political and ethnic divides while promoting unity through dialogue, respect for the rule of law and equitable distribution of national resources. He said genuine leadership should inspire confidence and foster a sense of belonging among all citizens.
Obi also urged Nigerians not to be distracted by political attacks, saying the country’s future depends on leaders willing to make difficult decisions for the common good. He emphasized that national progress can only be achieved when citizens are united behind a shared vision of development, security and prosperity.
His comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, with major political figures outlining their visions and responding to criticism over their leadership credentials. Obi reaffirmed his commitment to offering Nigerians what he described as competent, accountable and people-focused leadership capable of uniting the nation and addressing its longstanding challenges.
