Arsenal have opened the 2026/27 season in spectacular fashion after sweeping aside Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions produced an outstanding performance from the opening whistle, overwhelming a Manchester City side beginning a new chapter under Enzo Maresca. Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard were on target as Arsenal secured their 18th Community Shield triumph.

The victory was particularly significant because it came against the FA Cup holders and one of Arsenal’s biggest domestic rivals. It also provided an early indication that Arteta’s side are ready to defend their Premier League crown with the same ambition that carried them to the title last season.

Arsenal needed only 23 seconds to announce their intentions.

Myles Lewis Skelly produced an excellent pass that released Riccardo Calafiori into space, and the Italian defender kept his composure before calmly finishing past Manchester City’s new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The strike was one of the fastest goals ever scored in the Community Shield and immediately placed City under enormous pressure. Rather than allowing Maresca’s players to settle, Arsenal continued pressing aggressively and moved the ball with confidence.

Manchester City eventually began to see more possession, but Arsenal remained the more threatening side. Phil Foden tested David Raya from distance around the 20th minute, only for the Arsenal goalkeeper to produce a strong save.

Erling Haaland also struggled to find the space required to influence the contest. Arsenal’s defenders stayed close to the Norwegian striker and limited the service reaching him.

The Gunners eventually doubled their advantage in the 28th minute.

Martin Ødegaard delivered a dangerous cross towards the far post, where new Arsenal signing Christos Tzolis rose to head the ball back across goal. Kai Havertz reacted quickly and headed the ball towards the net, with Donnarumma unable to keep it out.

The goal gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead and reflected their superior movement in the final third. Tzolis was particularly impressive, becoming a constant threat down the flank and playing an important role in Arsenal’s attacking combinations.

City needed a dramatic response after the interval, but instead Arsenal delivered another blow just three minutes into the second half.

Tzolis again found himself at the centre of the action, providing the pass for Ødegaard. The Arsenal captain showed outstanding composure inside the penalty area, using his first touch to move beyond Josko Gvardiol before calmly finishing beyond the wrong footed Donnarumma.

At 3-0, the contest was effectively over.

Manchester City attempted to find a route back into the game, but Arsenal’s defensive organisation remained impressive. Raya made important saves when required, while City’s attacking players struggled to create clear opportunities.

Haaland, who finished last season as the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner with 27 goals, was largely kept quiet and was substituted before the hour mark. That summed up a frustrating afternoon for the Manchester club.

For Maresca, the result could hardly have been more difficult. The Italian was taking charge of Manchester City in his first competitive match following the end of Pep Guardiola’s long and trophy filled reign.

The absence of Rodri was also noticeable as City struggled to establish the control and rhythm normally associated with them. Arsenal were able to disrupt City’s midfield and repeatedly exploit spaces in dangerous areas.

For Arteta, however, the afternoon could scarcely have gone better.

His team looked sharp, aggressive and confident, while the performances of players such as Calafiori, Ødegaard, Lewis Skelly and Tzolis provided plenty of encouragement ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Tzolis was particularly influential, contributing two assists and playing a part in all three Arsenal goals. His performance will undoubtedly increase excitement among Arsenal supporters about what the new season could bring.

The Community Shield is traditionally viewed as the curtain raiser rather than a major indicator of the season ahead, but Arsenal’s performance carried greater significance because of the quality of their opponent and the emphatic nature of the victory.

The Gunners have now sent an unmistakable warning to their Premier League rivals.

Arteta’s side are not simply interested in defending their title. They want more silverware.

Ødegaard summed up that ambition after the match, making it clear that Arsenal are hungry to repeat their domestic success while also targeting further trophies, including the Champions League.

For Manchester City, meanwhile, the defeat provides Maresca with an immediate reminder of the size of the task ahead. There is plenty of time to correct the problems exposed in Cardiff, but the new manager will need his team to respond quickly once the Premier League begins.

Arsenal’s league campaign starts against Coventry City, while City will face Bournemouth.

For now, though, the spotlight belongs entirely to Arsenal.

Final Score: Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City

Goals: Riccardo Calafiori 1′, Kai Havertz 28′, Martin Ødegaard 48′ approximately.
