Benfica have reached a verbal agreement with Bayern Munich to bring Portugal international João Palhinha back to his home country, in a deal that could be worth up to €19 million.
According to the latest reports, the Portuguese giants have agreed to pay Bayern a fixed fee of €14 million, with a further €5 million available through performance related add ons. The two clubs are now expected to exchange the necessary documents, with the transfer moving towards completion.
The agreement represents a major development in Palhinha’s future after a difficult spell in Germany. The midfielder joined Bayern from Fulham in 2024 for a reported €51 million, with the overall package potentially reaching €56 million including bonuses. However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Munich and subsequently spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.
At 31, Palhinha now appears ready to return to Portugal and begin another chapter of a career that has taken him from the lower levels of Portuguese football to some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Born in Lisbon on July 9, 1995, Palhinha developed through Sporting CP’s academy after joining the club as a teenager. His path to the top was not immediate. He initially gained senior experience with Sporting’s B team before embarking on loan spells that helped him develop into one of Portugal’s most respected defensive midfielders.
His development eventually earned him a more prominent role at Sporting’s senior side. During his time in Lisbon, he became known for his physical strength, ability to win tackles, positional discipline and willingness to protect the defence.
Palhinha later spent time with clubs including Moreirense and Braga before returning to Sporting, where he established himself as a key player. He made 95 official appearances for Sporting across his career there and helped the club win major domestic honours, including the Portuguese league title and domestic cups.
His performances in Portugal attracted attention from England, eventually leading Fulham to sign him in July 2022 for around £20 million.
The move proved to be one of the most important steps in Palhinha’s career.
He immediately adapted to the intensity of the Premier League and quickly developed a reputation as one of the division’s most effective ball winning midfielders. Palhinha made his Premier League debut against Liverpool in August 2022 and scored his first Fulham goal against Brentford later that month.
His defensive statistics were particularly impressive. During his Fulham career, Palhinha regularly ranked among the Premier League’s leading players for tackles, while his performances earned him Fulham’s Player of the Season award in his first campaign.
His impact eventually convinced Bayern Munich to invest heavily in him.
The German giants had previously attempted to sign Palhinha and eventually completed the transfer in July 2024. The move was regarded as an opportunity for the Portuguese midfielder to establish himself at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
However, competition for places at Bayern proved difficult. Palhinha faced competition from players including Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic, while physical problems also disrupted his progress. He made 25 appearances during his first Bayern season and found regular first team football difficult to secure.
Bayern subsequently allowed him to join Tottenham on loan for the 2025/26 campaign. The move returned Palhinha to the Premier League, where his experience and physical presence once again became valuable attributes. Tottenham officially confirmed the season long loan in August 2025.
Now, however, Palhinha is set to leave Bayern permanently.
Benfica’s move is particularly interesting because the club are bringing an experienced Portugal international back to his native country. The midfielder’s ability to break up attacks, protect the back four and control the defensive side of midfield could make him an important addition to Benfica’s squad.
The transfer also represents a significant financial change for Bayern. The German champions paid more than €50 million to sign Palhinha two years ago, meaning the reported €14 million guaranteed fee represents a substantial reduction on their original investment.
For Palhinha, the move could provide an opportunity to revive his career at a club where expectations are high but where he could potentially enjoy a more prominent role.
Benfica will hope his experience in England and Germany can add leadership and defensive stability to their midfield. His international pedigree is another advantage, having represented Portugal at senior level after progressing through the country’s youth system.
The transfer is now moving towards its final stages, with the remaining paperwork expected to be completed before Palhinha can officially begin his Benfica return.
After rising through Sporting’s system, establishing himself at Fulham, experiencing the challenge of Bayern Munich and returning to England with Tottenham, the Portuguese midfielder is now preparing to come home.
For Benfica, the potential €19 million package could prove to be a calculated investment in an experienced defensive midfielder. For Palhinha, it could be the fresh start needed to rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most sought after midfielders.
