Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after Colombia scored a dramatic late winner to secure a 1-0 victory in their quarter-final clash on Sunday.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2010, with the Falconets left devastated after holding Colombia at bay for almost the entire match.
Just when the contest appeared destined for extra time, Valerin Loboa struck in the second minute of stoppage time, sending Colombia into the last four and ending Nigeria’s impressive campaign in painful fashion.
The match at Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź was a tense encounter from the opening whistle, with both sides showing plenty of caution while searching for an opening.
Nigeria had entered the quarter-final full of confidence after producing one of their best performances of the tournament in the previous round, defeating England 3-0. Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu had scored in that impressive victory, while goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma produced an outstanding display.
Colombia, meanwhile, had eliminated tournament hosts Poland 1-0 in the Round of 16 through a late own goal. The South Americans therefore arrived in the quarter-final knowing how to survive tight knockout matches.
Nigeria started brightly and created opportunities during the opening half.
Tosin Rafiu was among the players looking to trouble the Colombian defence, while Tumininu Adeshina, Favour Nkwocha, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Onyedikachi Ekezie also attempted to break the deadlock.
However, Colombia remained dangerous at the other end. Loboa and Isabella Diaz were involved in some of their best attacking moments, but neither side could produce the finishing touch required to change the score.
The first half therefore ended goalless.
After the interval, the Falconets continued looking for a breakthrough. Nigeria created further opportunities through Adeshina, Nkwocha, Mafisere, Akekoromowei and Ekezie, but Colombia’s defence continued to frustrate the African side.
The decisive moment appeared to arrive in the 77th minute.
Nigeria were reduced to 10 players when Kafayat Mafisere received a straight red card, with the decision subsequently confirmed following a VAR review. The dismissal completely changed the balance of the contest and forced Nigeria to defend with a numerical disadvantage for the remainder of the match.
Despite being down to 10 players, the Falconets refused to simply sit back.
Head coach Moses Aduku made changes in an attempt to keep Nigeria competitive, introducing Winner Onajite David, Precious Oscar and Victory Lucky at different stages of the second half.
Colombia sensed an opportunity and began applying greater pressure as the clock moved towards the final whistle.
Nigeria’s defensive organisation, however, remained strong. The Falconets appeared to have done enough to force extra time, with the match still locked at 0-0 deep into the 90 minutes.
Then came the heartbreak.
With the match already in stoppage time, Colombia finally found the opening they had been searching for. Valerin Loboa scored in the 92nd minute, breaking Nigeria’s resistance and putting Colombia 1-0 ahead.
The goal left Nigeria with almost no time to respond.
The Falconets nevertheless pushed forward during the remaining minutes. Akekoromowei had another opportunity in the seventh minute of added time, but Nigeria could not find the equaliser before the final whistle.
Colombia held on to complete a dramatic victory and book their place in the semi-finals.
For Nigeria, the manner of the defeat will make the elimination particularly painful. The Falconets had defended resolutely for more than 90 minutes, survived playing with 10 players and appeared destined for extra time before Loboa delivered the decisive blow.
The result also brought an end to another impressive World Cup campaign for Nigeria’s U-20 women.
The Falconets had struggled at the beginning of the tournament, losing 2-0 to Spain before drawing 0-0 with China. They then exploded into life with a remarkable 10-1 victory over New Caledonia before producing a statement 3-0 win against England in the Round of 16.
Nigeria have now reached the final of the U-20 Women’s World Cup twice but remain without a title. Their previous runners-up finishes came in 2010 and 2014, while their last semi-final appearance was also in 2012.
Colombia will now advance to the semi-finals, where they will face either DPR Korea or Canada.
For the Falconets, however, the dream is over.
They had battled, created chances and defended bravely, but one red card and one devastating moment in stoppage time ultimately decided their fate.
Final Score: Nigeria 0-1 Colombia
Goal: Valerin Loboa 92′
Red Card: Kafayat Mafisere 77′ (Nigeria, VAR confirmed)
