Obasa insists he remains Lagos Assembly Speaker after impeachment

Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has boldly declared that he remains the Speake of the Assembly, despite his removal by the lawmakers.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that Obasa’s ousting occurred on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of the 40 legislators voted against him while he was away in the United States.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the action, calling it an unlawful coup attempt.

Upon returning to Lagos after his vacation, Obasa was greeted by a large crowd of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters, including local government executives, party members, and political stakeholders from across the state.

During the reception, Obasa addressed the media, emphasizing that his removal was unconstitutional and that it would remain invalid unless proper constitutional procedures were followed.

He made it clear that he was not intimidated by his impeachment and insisted that due process must be observed in all actions taken against him.

Obasa stated, “I have never approached any leader in Lagos to express any desire to be governor.

“If the process to remove a speaker is to be followed, then the constitution must be adhered to.

“I am not worried about my removal, but I am concerned about the unfounded allegations against me, particularly from the person who claimed I was involved in the ouster of former Speaker Jokotade Pelumi, Deputy Speaker Funmi Tejuosho, and the suspension of some lawmakers.

“The due process was followed in their cases, and there was no interference from the police.”

He continued, “Pelumi was removed from the floor of the Assembly, Tejuosho was removed while present in the House, and the suspended lawmakers were also in the House when their suspension was announced.

“But in my case, the police, led by the Commissioner of Police, invaded the Assembly, and another group of officers stormed my residence, locking my children outside the gate while my wife was inside.”

Obasa, who served as Speaker for 10 years, expressed that while he respects the will of God, he believed no one had the right to remove him in such an unlawful manner.

He concluded by stating that the impeachment process, if not done according to the constitution, would remain invalid, and he would continue to uphold his position.

According to Obasa, removing a Speaker using a “fake mace” was not only improper but unconstitutional.
