Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis rocking the party and have called for the immediate resolution of the rift within its ranks.

This statement comes as the PDP national chairman, Iliya Damagum, reiterated his warning to party leaders about destroying the party, Diaspora digital media (DDM) reported.

He emphasized that the PDP is greater than the interests of individual members, urging unity among its ranks.

The leadership crisis within the PDP came to a head during Wednesday’s Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, where Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Hon. Sunday Ude-Okoye clashed over the national secretary position.

The disagreement escalated when an attempt by Anyanwu’s aide to stop Ude-Okoye from attending the meeting was rebuffed.

This confrontation led to the large deployment of security personnel at the PDP premises.

The battle for the national secretary position is just one front in a series of internal struggles that have caused a split within the party’s National Working Committee.

These internal divisions have contributed to the party’s current disarray, and the PDP is expected to hold its much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting next month to address these issues.

Speaking in Bauchi on Thursday at the North East Zonal Caucus meeting, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, on behalf of the Northeast PDP governors, claimed that some detractors causing division within the party are doing so as a covert way to discredit and abandon the PDP.

He criticized the actions of these individuals, stating that they were only fueling discord for their own personal interests.

The stakeholders’ meeting also included the PDP National Reconciliation Committee, which attended to help mediate and resolve these issues.

Despite the challenges, Mohammed assured the party members that the North East PDP governors would continue to collaborate with National Assembly members to minimize further division within the party.

He commended the level of unity and harmony that exists among the caucus members, stating, “This is worthy of emulation.”

His remarks on party unity were echoed by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who assured that the three governors from the North-East would work together to strengthen the PDP in the region.

Fintiri highlighted the importance of unity within the region, noting that the harmony in the North-East contributed to the PDP’s success in all states of the region during the last presidential election.

“There is no state in the zone that PDP lost,” he emphasized.

“Even the one we lost in Borno, up until now, we are still wondering how we lost that election because we know we did not lose that election in Borno.”

In his remarks, Damagum reassured party members that the PDP would emerge stronger from the current internal turmoil that has been hindering the party’s smooth operations.

He also warned that no one within the party is above the collective interests of the PDP.

He emphasized that no leader in the PDP is attempting to undermine another, urging members to unite and weather the storm together, as they have done in the past.

“Your party is still the best, and it stands out in all tests.

It is still standing, and we always find a way to surmount our challenges.

This is ideal for democracy,” Damagum said.

Damagum called on all PDP members and leaders to set aside their differences, end the division, and protect the collective interests of the party.

He added, “We have experienced politicians who have seen it all.

“No personal bidding.

“Nobody is above this party.

“The party is more than an individual.”

Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo also expressed confidence in the future of the PDP, stating that the party would continue to make progress and reclaim power in 2027.

He noted that it was only a matter of time before the PDP would emerge victorious in the next general elections.

“We will overcome our challenges, emerge stronger, and have an occupant of the seat at the top of the country from our party.

We have done it before, and we will continue to do it,” Dankwambo emphasized.
