(DDM) — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong disappointment over the Federal High Court ruling that ordered the suspension of its planned National Convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15–16, 2025.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the ruling, delivered by Justice Kolawole Omotosho in Abuja, directed the PDP to halt all convention plans, citing procedural breaches and failure to issue the statutory 21-day notice as required by law.
Justice Omotosho also advised the party to “put its house in order” before proceeding with the exercise to elect new national officers.
In a swift response, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, condemned the ruling, describing it as “an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”
The statement read in part:
“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is appalled by the judgement of the Federal High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Kolawole Omotosho. The decision is an assault on Nigeria’s democracy. However, it does not vitiate our ability to continue with preparations for our National Convention.”
Ologunagba noted that the ruling contravenes an existing Supreme Court judgment affirming the supremacy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.
He added that the PDP remains committed to its constitutional right to convene, deliberate, and elect new national officers to lead the opposition for the next four years.
“Our Party notes the recent Supreme Court judgment which affirms the supremacy of a political party in the management of its internal affairs. We, therefore, charge our members, chapters, and organs to remain focused and steadfast,” the statement added.
Ologunagba further confirmed that the party had directed its legal team to immediately appeal the judgment, vowing not to relent in its defence of multiparty democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
“The PDP, as the leading opposition party committed to the rule of law, has directed its lawyers to take immediate action to appeal this judgment. We remain unwavering in our determination to uphold, defend, and promote democracy in our country,” he said.
Political analysts told DDM that the ruling could intensify internal tensions within the PDP, which has faced leadership disputes and regional factionalism since the aftermath of the 2023 general elections.
However, party insiders insist that the convention, which aims to restructure the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, will proceed once the legal hurdle is cleared.
The PDP leadership has also urged members nationwide to remain calm, united, and law-abiding as it navigates the court process.
