Babangida backs new political movement ahead of 2027 elections

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, former military president General Ibrahim Babangida has expressed his unwavering support for national unity and development.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that his allies are mobilizing under a new political movement, The Nigerian Project, which aims to drive national reforms and foster inclusive governance.

During a visit by The Nigerian Project delegation to his Hilltop residence in Minna, Babangida reiterated his strong belief in the unity of Nigeria.

He emphasized that sustainable progress can only be achieved when citizens remain committed to national cohesion.

According to him, a divided country cannot attain meaningful development.

Babangida, a central figure in Nigeria’s political history, ruled the country from 1985 to 1993 after toppling General Muhammadu Buhari’s military government.

His tenure was marked by significant economic reforms, including the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), and a transition to democratic rule that was ultimately cut short by the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.

Despite controversies surrounding his leadership, Babangida remains an influential voice in national discourse, particularly on issues of governance and unity.

Addressing the delegation, Babangida stressed the importance of patriotism and collective responsibility in shaping Nigeria’s future.

He called on Nigerians to support the nation’s leadership and participate actively in governance.

“I believe in one Nigeria, and on its unity, I stand,” Babangida stated.

He commended The Nigerian Project for upholding the values of national unity and political stability.

Babangida further underscored the need for inclusive governance, where all citizens have a voice in policy formulation and implementation.

He urged leaders to create avenues for dialogue, public engagement, and constructive debates that promote national development.

According to him, a government that listens to its people fosters trust and progress.

Reflecting on his years in power, Babangida noted that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity.

He cautioned against divisive politics and called on citizens to prioritize national interests above sectional agendas.

“Thank you for following my footsteps and upholding the ideals of patriotism and national unity that we all fought for,” Babangida told the delegation.

With the 2027 elections fast approaching, Babangida’s endorsement of The Nigerian Project signals a renewed push for political realignment and national cohesion.

The movement, consisting of political veterans and emerging leaders, seeks to promote policies that reflect Babangida’s long-standing vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria.
