UNIZIK expels student for assaulting lecturer over viral TikTok video

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expelled a student for physically assaulting a lecturer.

The student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, was found guilty of gross misconduct after an investigation by the Student Disciplinary Committee.

According to the information available to Diaspora digital media (DDM) the incident occurred when the student was recording a TikTok video on campus.

Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, walked past during the recording.

He asked the student to delete the video, believing it was inappropriate to include him in the footage.

The student refused to comply with the lecturer’s request, leading to a confrontation.

During the exchange, the student physically assaulted the lecturer.

The university promptly launched an investigation through the Student Disciplinary Committee.

The committee reviewed the case and found the student guilty of violating Regulation 4 of the Student Disciplinary Regulations.

The committee submitted its findings to the acting vice-chancellor for approval.

After reviewing the case, the acting vice-chancellor approved the committee’s recommendation to expel the student.

A memo from the university officially confirmed the expulsion and outlined the reasons for the decision.

The memo stated that the student’s actions constituted gross misconduct and a serious violation of university regulations.

The university emphasized that maintaining discipline and respect for staff members is a top priority.

The expelled student has been instructed to vacate the university premises immediately.

She is also required to return any university property in her possession.

The expulsion has sparked debates among students and staff members.

Some students believe the punishment is justified, given the severity of the offense.

Others argue that alternative disciplinary measures, such as suspension, could have been considered.

University officials have defended the decision, stating that physical assault on lecturers is unacceptable.

The institution has reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline and ensuring a safe academic environment.

Authorities have urged students to resolve conflicts through proper channels rather than resorting to violence.

Students have been reminded to adhere strictly to the university’s code of conduct.

The university warned that any future cases of misconduct would be met with strict disciplinary action.

The student will no longer have access to academic and residential facilities within the university.
