IBB: I hope true winners of past elections will be recognized – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has reacted to IBB’s statement.

Former Military President of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd), admitted that the late Chief MKO Abiola won the June 12, 1993, election.

IBB made this admission during the launch of his autobiography, ‘A Journey in Service,’ on Thursday.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) he expressed regret over the annulment of the election, calling it an unfortunate incident in Nigeria’s history.

IBB stated that as a leader, he takes full responsibility for all decisions made under his administration.

Peter Obi, who attended the event, shared his thoughts on his verified X account.

He described it as an honor to witness the launch of Babangida’s long-awaited book at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

Obi praised IBB’s contributions to Nigeria’s economy and private sector development.

He emphasized that Babangida played a significant role in strengthening national cohesion and economic policies.

Documenting such experiences, Obi noted, provides opportunities for learning from past leadership experiences.

He stated that he looks forward to reading the book and gaining insights from it.

Obi highlighted two key takeaways from the keynote address and IBB’s remarks on the 1993 election.

The first was a notable French quotation, “Rien n’a changé,” meaning, “Nothing much has changed.”

Obi argued that Nigeria is worse off than it was during Babangida’s era.

He compared Nigeria’s progress to that of countries like Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, and Ghana.

He noted that while these nations moved up the Human Development Index, Nigeria remained stagnant.

The second key takeaway was Ghana’s steady democratic progress over the past 30 years.

He pointed out that Ghana’s elections reflect the genuine will of the people.

Unlike Nigeria, Ghana has seen ruling party candidates concede defeat to uphold democracy.

One of the most profound moments of the event was IBB’s acknowledgment of MKO Abiola’s victory.

Obi described this as a step towards national healing, unity, and progress.

He expressed hope that other political figures would also recognize the true winners of past elections.

He stressed the need for Nigeria to tell its electoral history with honesty and self-reflection.
