Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman silenced his critics in emphatic fashion, scoring twice and playing a pivotal role in Atalanta B.C.’s dominant 5-0 victory over Empoli on Sunday.

The Nigerian international, who faced scrutiny following Atalanta’s midweek UEFA Champions League play-off defeat to Club Brugge—where he missed a crucial penalty—delivered a standout performance to help his team bounce back in style.

Atalanta seized control of the match early, with a stroke of luck giving them the lead in the 10th minute.

A deflected effort off Empoli’s Emmanuel Gyasi looped over the goalkeeper and into the net, setting the tone for the game.

Just minutes later, Lookman showcased his creativity, delivering a clever cross that was flicked on by Berat Djimsiti for Mateo Retegui to double the advantage.

The Nigerian forward then took center stage, demonstrating his composure with a clinical right-footed finish in the 43rd minute after being played through on goal, giving Atalanta a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

Lookman wasn’t done yet. In the 55th minute, he added his second goal of the match, capping off a brilliant team move with a composed finish.

Atalanta continued to dominate, and substitute Gianluca Scamacca rounded off the scoring with a late goal, sealing an emphatic 5-0 victory.

He definitely answered his critics with a man-of-the-match display.

*Leaving in the Summer?

The Nigerian international, who has been in scintillating form this season, is reportedly attracting interest from several top European clubs, fueling rumours of a potential summer departure.

His form plus a fractious relationship with Gasperrini have fueled speculations about a summer exit.

While no official bids have been confirmed, sources close to the player suggest that Lookman is open to exploring new challenges, especially if a bigger club comes calling.

“Right now, my focus is on giving my best for Atalanta and helping the team achieve its goals this season.

“But in football, you never know what the future holds. I’m always looking to grow and challenge myself at the highest level,” he said.

His comments have only added to the speculation, with clubs in the English Premier League and Bundesliga reportedly monitoring his situation.

Atalanta manager Gasperini, however, has made it clear that the club is keen to retain their star forward.

“Ademola is a fantastic player and an important part of our project. We want him to stay, but ultimately, it’s up to the player and the club to decide what’s best for everyone involved,” Gasperini stated in a post-match press conference.
