Akwa Ibom: Man arrested for alleged gruesome murder of wife

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man, Victor Okoh, for the alleged gruesome murder of his wife, Victoria Okoh, 38, in their residence in Oron Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued by DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday.

The statement reads: “At about 05:20 hours, operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command responded to a distress call from concerned residents in Oron.

“Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the mutilated body of Victoria Okoh lying outside the house she shared with her husband.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Victor Okoh had allegedly attacked his wife with a machete following accusations of infidelity.”

The statement alleged that the suspect attempted to evade arrest by hiding in the ceiling of the house.

However, the police operatives tactically secured the building, forced entry, and successfully apprehended him.

“The machete used in the crime was recovered, and photographs of the scene were taken for further investigation”, the police statement further divulged.

The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue for an autopsy, while the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has condemned the act in its entirety, describing it as a “heinous and barbaric crime.”

CP Azare assured the public that justice would be served.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is committed to ensuring that the perpetrator of this gruesome act faces the full wrath of the law.

“We will leave no stone unturned in our investigation to ensure that justice is served for the victim and her family,” he said.

The Commissioner also issued a stern warning against domestic violence, urging residents to seek lawful means of resolving disputes.

“Violence is never the answer. We encourage members of the public to explore peaceful and legal avenues for conflict resolution.

“The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” he stated.

A resident, Mrs. Ekaette Udoh, expressed her grief and called for stricter measures to address domestic violence.

“This is heartbreaking. We need more awareness and support systems to prevent such incidents in the future. No one deserves to die in such a brutal manner.”
