Gynecologists reveal the surprising truth about drinking cold water during pregnancy

Gynaecologists have dismissed claims that drinking cold water during pregnancy affects the baby’s growth or body temperature.
Maternal health experts insist there is no scientific evidence linking cold water intake to fetal temperature changes.
They explained that water, regardless of its initial temperature, does not reach the placenta at the same temperature.
Experts noted that the human body regulates fluid temperature before it reaches the digestive system.
By the time cold or hot water reaches the stomach, it adjusts to the body’s internal temperature.
Doctors urged pregnant women to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather, to prevent dehydration.
This clarification debunks old myths about the temperature of water pregnant women should drink.
According to news report on health, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Christopher Aimakhu, dismissed the cold water myth.
He stated that drinking cold water does not reach the placenta or alter a baby’s temperature in the womb.
“Taking cold water does not affect the baby. It doesn’t go directly to the placenta or the baby,” he said.
The professor encouraged pregnant women to drink enough fluids, especially when tired or experiencing hot weather.
He emphasized that cold water could be more refreshing than harmful during pregnancy.
“I don’t see any dangers in taking cold water during pregnancy,” Aimakhu stressed.
He added that no scientific proof exists to support claims that cold water harms unborn babies.
A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr. Joseph Akinde, also dismissed the claim as baseless.
“Drinking cold water does not affect the baby. These myths are unfounded and lack scientific backing,” Akinde stated.
He explained that the body’s homeostatic mechanism regulates fluid temperature after ingestion.
“When you drink hot or cold water, it adjusts to your body’s temperature before reaching the stomach,” he said.
He noted that the body’s systems function to maintain stable internal conditions, including fluid temperature.
“So, drinking hot or cold water does not matter as far as body functions are concerned,” he concluded.
