Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed calls for his resignation over unverified allegations.
He emphasized the need for evidence before any official steps aside, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports.
In a recent YouTube video, Akpabio said he had no intention of stepping down.
He described the calls as speculative and lacking substance.
Akpabio stressed that democracy must be guided by facts, not emotions.
In his remarks, he also called for responsible reporting and respect for due process.
The Senate President likened his experience to injustices against Black Americans.
According to him, many were jailed for decades based on false claims.
“They went to prison for 25, 27, even 37 years, just for false allegations,” he said.
Akpabio said some were targeted simply because of their skin color.
He warned against rushing to judgment without verified facts.
The Senate President noted that similar injustices must be avoided in Nigeria.
He called for balance between public scrutiny and fair treatment.
He argued that truth must guide decisions, not public pressure.
Akpabio acknowledged citizens’ right to demand accountability.
However, he said accountability must rest on clear, verifiable evidence.
He reaffirmed his commitment to legislative duties and national service.
The Senate President described the attacks as a distraction from important work.
He said he remains focused and unshaken by media trials.
Akpabio criticized the growing trend of “trial by public opinion.”
He said reputations and careers should not be destroyed by unproven claims.
He warned that such political culture weakens democratic institutions.
Akpabio urged Nigerians to prioritize integrity and justice in governance.
He concluded that facts, not false narratives, must determine a leader’s fate.
