NAFDAC seals herbal medicine facility, water factories, bakery in Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, sealed multiple illegal production facilities in Kaduna State.

The clampdown affected a herbal medicine store, a bakery, and five sachet water factories operating without NAFDAC approval or minimum hygiene standards.

NAFDAC officials, led by Kaduna State Coordinator Mr. Nasiru Mato, shut down Aji Garau Herbal Medicine Store, Al-Ihsan Bread, and five water-producing factories.

These include Karkarku Table Water, 1165 Table Water, Zaiba Table Water, Maisalati Table Water, and Rumaisa Table Water.

Mato disclosed that the agency sealed the facilities due to gross non-compliance with regulatory standards.

“These factories have failed to meet minimum operational requirements and are grossly unhygienic,” he told reporters.

He said some facilities operated without registration, while others used fake NAFDAC numbers to deceive the public.

“Many of these products show NAFDAC numbers, but investigations reveal they are forged or self-generated without registration,” he warned.

He stressed that the products are unsafe for human consumption and must not remain in circulation.

“The sachet water plants and the bakery were producing food and drink items unfit for public health. The herbal concoction, AJI GARAU, is being manufactured under dangerous and unacceptable conditions,” Mato stated.

According to NAFDAC, AJI GARAU herbal mixture violated all standard protocols for production, including proper equipment, trained personnel, and hygienic practices.

“All utensils used in its production were substandard, and the finished products were deceitfully labeled with misleading addresses,” Mato added.

The agency confiscated all herbal products found during the raid and sealed the production centre.

“This sealing serves as a first-line sanction. Full investigations will follow, and further penalties may be applied,” the coordinator said.

He warned manufacturers against bypassing safety regulations, emphasizing that NAFDAC will continue surveillance across every corner of Kaduna State.

“We will not rest. We will go to every nook and cranny of the state to fish out defaulters. Public health is not negotiable,” he declared.

Kaduna residents expressed relief at the crackdown, saying illegal production of food, water, and medicine poses a silent danger to unsuspecting consumers.

A local resident, who pleaded anonymity, said, “We buy sachet water daily thinking it’s safe. Now we know many are fake. NAFDAC should keep raiding them.”

The Kaduna operation is part of a broader effort by NAFDAC to stamp out illegal food and drug manufacturing across Nigeria.

The agency has urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious factories or products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
