Trump accuses Zelensky of giving Putin ‘reason to bomb the hell out of’ Ukraine

President Trump on Friday, June 6, 2025, accused the Ukrainian president Zelensky of provoking the attacks from Russia.

Online media sources suggest that the recent Ukrainian drone strikes that targeted Russian airfields housing long-range nuclear-capable bombers have significantly raised the risk of escalation, giving rise to Trump’s comments.

In addition to the drone attacks on several Russian airbases, Ukraine also targeted railway bridges within Russia last week.

This resulted in the derailment of both civilian and freight trains.

These attacks killed at least seven people and injured over 120, including children.

The incidents drew immediate attention, with Russian President Vladimir Putin addressing the situation during a phone call with President Trump on Wednesday.

During the conversation, Putin warned that Russia’s response would be both inevitable and justified.

When asked about the Ukrainian strikes on key components of Russia’s nuclear triad and whether it altered his view of the conflict, Trump expressed his concerns.

He stated that while he did not approve of the escalation, it had given President Putin a reason to take retaliatory action.

Trump said, “Well, they gave Putin a reason to go in and bomb the hell out of them last night.

“That’s something I didn’t like about it.

“When I saw it, I said: ‘Here we go… now it’s going to be a strike.’”

In retaliation for what Moscow labeled “terrorist acts” by Ukraine, the Russian military launched significant strikes on Ukrainian defense industry targets early Friday.

The strikes, which involved air-, sea-, and land-launched missiles, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), targeted key facilities linked to Ukraine’s military capabilities.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the targets included:

• “design bureaus, enterprises involved in the production and repair of Ukraine’s weapons and military equipment,
• workshops for the assembly of attack drones, flight training centers, and,
• warehouses storing weapons and military equipment.”

Putin further condemned the sabotage of railway bridges in Russia, calling it “undoubtedly a terrorist act” carried out by the “illegitimate regime in Kiev.”

He also warned that Ukraine’s government was “gradually turning into a terrorist organization.”

These remarks highlighted the heightened tensions as both sides escalated their actions.

Russia has also accused Ukraine of intensifying its attacks to disrupt US-backed peace talks.

Moscow claims that the information reaching President Trump about the conflict is being “filtered” by individuals pushing for continued US support for Ukraine.

These assertions are in line with Moscow’s ongoing narrative, which frames Ukraine’s actions as deliberately undermining the possibility of peace.

The Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure, particularly those targeting airfields and military supply lines, have prompted significant concern in international circles.

Moscow’s retaliation underscores the increasing risks of direct confrontation.

It also underscores the potential for the conflict to escalate further, potentially drawing in more countries and leading to wider destabilization in the region.
